When you are looking for a safety razor, you may find Merkur 34C Heavy Duty safety razor review on most shaving forums. It is a great safety razor.
Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor Review
This safety razor comes from Germany. Merkur has been making shaving tools for decades. Well, you can even say a century. Dovo is the company and it was established in 1906.
If a company is over 100 years and still producing the highest quality products, you can be sure that Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor is one of the best.
The Weight of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor
I always consider the weight of a safety razor is important. You can’t have a safety razor that is too light. Why? Because you end up using too much pressure when you are shaving.
I love a heavy safety razor like this Merkur 34C. The weight of the safety razor is enough to be the only pressure to use.
With 80gr on its weight, Merkur 34C can cut your beards and mustaches very easily. Of course, you need to pair it with a good double edge razor blade. Find a perfect razor blade for you from a blade sampler.
The Body of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor
This safety razor is made from brass and plated with chrome. The look is very beautiful.
The handle is around 8.5cm (3.25”). Quite comfortable to hold. The non-slip knurling really helps in the wet environment, which is always for this baby.
Some people will say that the handle is a bit too short. You can choose Merkur 180 for a longer handle version of this beauty.
For me, a shorter handle will convert into a high maneuverability. A more control. But again, I usually hold a safety razor near its head. So, I don’t have any preferable length in the handle.
The Performance of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor
This safety razor is known as a 2 pcs model. It means that you can open the top head but the base plate is stick to the handle. You just need to loosen up the bottom screw to expose the razor blade place. Please be careful when loading / unloading the razor blade.
Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor is suitable for a new wet shaver. Not a mild safety razor, though. Experienced wet shavers love this safety razor because it is not a mild safety razor but also not aggressive. Just about right.
You can even pair this Merkur 34C with Feather blade. The sharpest blade out there. Check the performance of Feather blade in here.
The closed comb head will protect your shaving session. Not my favorite head. Yes, I prefer an open comb head. I have an inclination toward an aggressive setup.
All in all, Merkur 34C will be a very good choice for a new person jumping into the wonderful world of traditional wet shaving.
Price of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor
Sadly, it is not the cheapest safety razor out there. There is a price for a good quality. Dovo has been known to produce high qualities shaving razors.
You can be sure that you get a very good quality product with this razor.
Pros and Cons of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor
- A rather mild razor. Good for either new wet shavers or experienced ones.
- Heavy razor. This will help you to avoid using excessive pressure.
- Chrome finish. It gives the razor a beautiful sparkle and a smooth surface.
- Good knurling. It prevents slippage and gives a good grip.
- A long history. Produced by one of the best shaving tool companies.
- A single blade razor. I switched to a DE single blade razor because of the horror of razor burns caused by multiple blades cartridge razor.
- Might need to use 3 passes. This safety razor is not an aggressive razor. You may need to do more passes to get the smoothest shave.
- Not all chrome are polished. It is under the head. But hey, it is inside. Nobody will notice it unless you open the head. Doesn’t affect performance at all.
- Not cheap. A very reasonable price considering the quality you get.
Watch Merkur 34 C and Feather Razor Blade
This is a good value for money safety razor. Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor will not let you down. A lot of people started with this razor and never changed again. That speaks volume of its quality and performance.
YMMV. I prefer choosing my Gillette slim adjustable at setting 9 to this Merkur. Like I said, I prefer an aggressive setting (which is not recommended for a beginner).
