Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor Review

When you are looking for a safety razor, you may find Merkur 34C Heavy Duty safety razor review on most shaving forums. It is a great safety razor.

Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor Review

This safety razor comes from Germany. Merkur has been making shaving tools for decades. Well, you can even say a century. Dovo is the company and it was established in 1906.

If a company is over 100 years and still producing the highest quality products, you can be sure that Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor is one of the best.

The Weight of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor

I always consider the weight of a safety razor is important. You can’t have a safety razor that is too light. Why? Because you end up using too much pressure when you are shaving.

I love a heavy safety razor like this Merkur 34C. The weight of the safety razor is enough to be the only pressure to use.

With 80gr on its weight, Merkur 34C can cut your beards and mustaches very easily. Of course, you need to pair it with a good double edge razor blade. Find a perfect razor blade for you from a blade sampler.

The Body of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor

This safety razor is made from brass and plated with chrome. The look is very beautiful.

The handle is around 8.5cm (3.25”). Quite comfortable to hold. The non-slip knurling really helps in the wet environment, which is always for this baby.
Some people will say that the handle is a bit too short. You can choose Merkur 180 for a longer handle version of this beauty.

For me, a shorter handle will convert into a high maneuverability. A more control. But again, I usually hold a safety razor near its head. So, I don’t have any preferable length in the handle.

The Performance of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor

This safety razor is known as a 2 pcs model. It means that you can open the top head but the base plate is stick to the handle. You just need to loosen up the bottom screw to expose the razor blade place. Please be careful when loading / unloading the razor blade.

Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor is suitable for a new wet shaver. Not a mild safety razor, though. Experienced wet shavers love this safety razor because it is not a mild safety razor but also not aggressive. Just about right.

You can even pair this Merkur 34C with Feather blade. The sharpest blade out there. Check the performance of Feather blade in here.

The closed comb head will protect your shaving session. Not my favorite head. Yes, I prefer an open comb head. I have an inclination toward an aggressive setup.

All in all, Merkur 34C will be a very good choice for a new person jumping into the wonderful world of traditional wet shaving.

Price of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor

Sadly, it is not the cheapest safety razor out there. There is a price for a good quality. Dovo has been known to produce high qualities shaving razors.
You can be sure that you get a very good quality product with this razor.

Pros and Cons of Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor

  • A rather mild razor. Good for either new wet shavers or experienced ones.
  • Heavy razor. This will help you to avoid using excessive pressure.
  • Chrome finish. It gives the razor a beautiful sparkle and a smooth surface.
  • Good knurling. It prevents slippage and gives a good grip.
  • A long history. Produced by one of the best shaving tool companies.
  • A single blade razor. I switched to a DE single blade razor because of the horror of razor burns caused by multiple blades cartridge razor.

  • Might need to use 3 passes. This safety razor is not an aggressive razor. You may need to do more passes to get the smoothest shave.
  • Not all chrome are polished. It is under the head. But hey, it is inside. Nobody will notice it unless you open the head. Doesn’t affect performance at all.
  • Not cheap. A very reasonable price considering the quality you get.

Watch Merkur 34 C and Feather Razor Blade

This is a good value for money safety razor. Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor will not let you down. A lot of people started with this razor and never changed again. That speaks volume of its quality and performance.

YMMV. I prefer choosing my Gillette slim adjustable at setting 9 to this Merkur. Like I said, I prefer an aggressive setting (which is not recommended for a beginner).

  1. I don’t have this razor, but according to your review is a product I’m considering to buy in order to get better my shaving.
Sometimes it is a painful experience that makes me think it twice before of doing it.
I hope this product will help me.
    Thanks you!

    1. Hi Franklin,
You should check on your technique, too. Sometimes it is because we use too much pressure on our skin. I will recommend you to get this Merkur 34C razor and a proper shaving soap.

  2. Great review. I love shaving products and mens grooming in general. been looking for that close barber shave. I should give this razor a go.

  3. I’m just a bit confused. In the review summary you say it’s not a mild razor, but then in the pros and cons section you say it is a mild razor. I just want to make sure as I’m a total beginner using this kind of razor. Thank you!

    1. Ah.. I didn’t make it clear. If mild is 1 and aggressive is 5, I can safely say that this razor is 3.

I said it a rather mild razor because I really prefer an aggressive razor. I hope this will clear things up.

      Thank you, Eric.

  4. Im also thinking of going back to this more traditional method of shaving. My dad and grandad both used this similar type of razor and the very manly feel of shaving with this is almost like a ritual. Screwing off the top, replacing blades and whatnot. I have to ask, how does this razor compare to a regular disposable gillette safety razor?

    1. Hi Pat,
I can safely say that the traditional wet shaving is a ritual. You must follow certain rules to have the best shaving experience. Like having a hot towel or a hot shower before shaving (even though I prefer a cold water shaving).

This razor is a great razor that you will love. Get one for yourself now!

  5. Wow! Great Post!

Thank You for the education on shaving. It seems like the Merkur 34C might be the answer for me to get a great shave.

  6. I have been thinking of a cute gift to give to a friend and this Merkur 34C Heavy Duty Safety Razor sounds like a cool gift to give. I like the fact that this razor is produced by a shaving company that has been in existence for a long period of time and I also like the fact that the razor is mild which means it can be used safely. Thanks for this interesting review.

    1. Hi Bea,
You and your friend will not be disappointed with this Merkur 34C. I will recommend this razor to any friend anytime.
One thing that I have to make clear that this razor is mild to my taste. It is more aggressive compared to Feather Popular.

I will still recommend beginners to get a good razor like this Merkur 34C as a starter. A good investment!

  7. OMG! I’ve been looking for this razor for so long. My father had one similar when he was younger and he’s been asking if I could find one for him. Being in his 70’s he wants things he I think after reading your feedback the Merkur 34C is the one for him. What a great gift this will make.

    Thank you

    1. Hi Dale,

Wow. You and your father are missing a lot of fun. Your father knew that this kind of razor is the best and that’s why he has been looking for it. You should get one for yourself, too, Dale!

  8. Preventing shaving rash on my neck is definitely something I struggle with. I like the fact this blade has a single razor which you say can help with this. Same again with the pressure with normal razor I feel like im pressing into my face sometimes ripping it off haha. I appreciate this tips

    1. Hi Kourtney,
Yes, you might be using too much pressure and too many blades in a single razor. The main reason I switched to a traditional wet shaving because of razor burns. I can’t take multiple blade razors anymore. They are horrifying.

You should try a traditional safety razor just like Merkur 34C stated above.

  9. Thank you for this review! Currently I do not own this particular razor, nor does anyone in the home. However, the first thing I noticed is that it truly reminded me of my dad’s old razor when I was a kid. This razor seems amazing enough to want to give it a try. Do you know if this works as well for women? Wasn’t sure if you had a gal in the home to confirm this or not. :o) Thanks much.

    1. Hi Paula,

This is a classic type safety razor. Anyone can use it, including women. It will be a fine tool to have. Razor has no specific gender feature. It is only a marketing ploy that the razor companies use.

Sure that some will say that women razors are designed specifically for women, but I see no difference. All razors are for shaving. So, yeah, go ahead and get this Merkur 34C for your own pleasure. 😀

  10. I have never experience this kind of shave, I have always used disposable razors but I`m getting tire of them, so i`m going to try this shaving razor. It`s a good think is not too aggressive as I`m a beginner. Thanks for the info.

  11. Hi Arief,
Thank you for sharing with us your helpful information.
My husband always uses an old razor so I decide to buy a new one for him! This seems affordable and light enough! But I still get one question, How do you compare this razor to an automatic one?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Mila,
This will be a perfect gift for your husband. One thing that I can compare to an electric razor that this safety razor will give you a very close shave.

  12. My fiance has been using my disposable razors as I buy them in bulk online which last me for a year. Because my razors are for the legs but he uses them on this face, does it really make a difference? I’m just wondering if this is worth gifting him this. What are your thoughts on this?

    1. Hi Vanessa,
Your fiance will love this Merkur 34C safety razor and you will, too.
A razor will do fine to cut any hair, whether they grow on legs or on a face. For healthy reasons, do not use the same blade with your fiance. Each person has to use a separate blade. Clean the razor after each use and dispose of old blades properly.

  13. Although I don’t use razor, this razor looks really nice. Its luxurious design really caught my eye. After reading your explanation, I’m really inclined to purchase one. Thanks for providing such detailed and great information! Keep up the good work:)
