This Merkur 180 Long Handled Safety Razor (also known as 23c) is great for a person transitioning to a DE wet shaving. It is a mild razor (you will find it hard to cut yourself with it).

Why a Double Edged (DE) Safety Razor?

A DE safety razor will give you better shaves than any disposable multi-blade cartridge razors. The reason is a multi-blade razor will give you “unnecessary shaves” that will lead to skin irritation and ingrown hairs. Just by changing your razor, you will find a great improvement in your shaving experience.

Is It Safe to Use a DE Safety Razor? The Exposed Edge Scares Me

Well. They are called safety razors for a reason. They are safe. Safer than a straight razor to be exact. Safety razors came into existence because people find straight razors are too scary or too troublesome.

Safety razors get its popularity because of the wars. Soldiers were issued safety razors to help them shave faster and efficiently. They do not have time to carefully shave with a straight razor.

You should find a mild razor to start with. Just like this Merkur 180 Long Handled Safety Razor.

What Kind of Blade This Safety Razor Use?

You can use any Double Edge blade. I will recommend you to get a DE blade sampler. Do take caution when you are handling a sharp object. This double edge blade is totally different from your regular multiblade safety razor cartridges.

Why Do I Have To Order a DE Blade Sampler?

It is because you will need to find your suitable blade. For me, I love Astra SP blade. I have a love and hate relationship with Dorco ST-3000 blade. I am curious about Feather and Voskhod blade. Each person will have their own favorite blade.

Who is Merkur?

Merkur Solingen has already been a top of the mind brand in the shaving industry. They are a part of Dovo Solingen which now focus on straight razors. Their history goes back to 1906.

Why Merkur 180 Long Handled Safety Razor?

Its long handle design will definitely help people with bigger hands. The knurled handle will give you a fine grip on a wet environment.

This razor is suitable for a beginner because it is a mild razor. Ladies also love the long handle because it is easier to reach the outer area.

How to Use Merkur 180 Long Handled Safety Razor?

Be careful when you are loading and unloading the blade. Do not touch the blade’s edge. It is sharp.

Hold the head on the side, avoiding the old blade (if you have it installed). Unscrew the head. Take the old blade away. Put the new blade. Screw the head again.

When you are ready to shave, put the razor’s head on your skin. Tilt it down until you feel the blade’s edge. This is to find your angle. Using no pressure, start shaving.

How to Care For Merkur Long Handled Safety Razor?Dovo and Merkur logo

This three pieces razor is easy to maintain. It is chrome plated. You just need to unscrew the head, wash the parts with mild soap, and store away. To make it simple: Keep it clean and dry. Occasionally, put some mineral oil on the screw. It will help the screw to move smoothly forever.

Do You Need to Polish It?

Word of caution. If you need to polish it, use a non-abrasive polish. The chrome plate is thin enough that you might scratch it away. Without the chrome, your safety razor will be prone to rust.

If you insist on having a shiny Merkur safety razor, then please use Maas Metal Polish or Blue Magic polish. They are proven to be satisfactory for most of the shaving forum members.

Do I recommend this Merkur 23c Long Handled Safety Razor?

YES. Definitely YES. Merkur has been known to produce high-quality products. This safety razor will give you a mild shave. The three pieces razor will store easily when you want to travel with it. (Just remember to check your sharp blades in).

  1. Killer article Arief! I’ve only ever used cartridge razors, and I’ve always believed that safety razors are dangerous and old-fashioned. I feel like an idiot after reading this, and your site in general.

I really wanna get into safety razors now. I’ve been cut so many times by the 3-blade cartridges I was starting to think I was just bad at shaving. I also never got a close shave!

    1. Hi Makki,

Get yourself a good safety razor like this Merkur 23c. Take it easy when you’re trying for the first time.

Use no pressure or as light as possible. You will have a better shaving experience. Ask me if you need more help.

  2. Thanks for the detailed comment! I think if I were a guy, I would be keen to buy this shaving blade from Merkur. I like that is safe enough for soldiers to use on the go. The DE Blade Sampler is great for people to find their favorite blade.

    1. Thank you, Yvonne. You can buy this one for your husband. I am sure that he is going to love it. And, yes, he should try a blade sampler to find out what suits him best.

  3. You know, your website is honetsly becoming one of my favorites. I just wish I grew a full beard haha but for now I will be focused on shaving my goatee.

  4. Halo Mas Arief ^^, just like you i’ve been dump catridge razor and cream from aerosol can, and start wet shaving, the whole ritual from prep to post shave just so addicted to it. There almost impossible to find wet shaving supplies here in Indonesia.

    1. Hi Mas Dimas,

Be careful. I have been spending a lot of money to this addiction. 😀
It is so hard to get wet shaving supplies here. So far, I can only get the Body Shop Maca Root for Men shaving series. At least, they help me get the better shaving experience. Cartridge razors and foam are not suitable for wet shaving.

I am glad you have been converted. WELCOME to the wonderful world of wet shaving!
What do you use? A DE safety razor or a straight razor?

      1. Im glad im converted, my first purchased is shaving cream, aftershave, and brush from bodyshop, also bought a cheap DE safety razor and astra blades from Tokopedia.
Currently using Muhle R106 safety razor with proraso products. Right now im still on my learning curve and honing my shaving skill with DE razor. I find your web from shaveden forum and i saw your post about how hard to find wet shaving supplies and i feel that ?

        1. That’s great, Dimas. You will love your stay at The Shave Den. They have amazing people there. I am trying to get some shaving supplies to sell at my Tokopedia store. I hope I can do that in the near future. I’m building my network at the moment.

In the meanwhile, I’m experimenting a preshave oil. It works amazing so far. I have a smooth shave after using that home made preshave oil.

  5. You know I have never been a picky one when it comes to razors. On the other hand my husband is the pickiest of all of them. He gets razor burns easily on his face and has to use a certain type of razor. Do you know if using the Merkur 180, will it help eliminate razor burns? If so… I will definitely show this to him.

    1. Hi Tanya,

I really recommend your husband to convert to a DE safety razor. Stop using those multiblade razors.

Please remember not to use any pressure when using a DE safety razor. This will definitely improve your husband’s shaving experience.

I will definitely recommend this Merkur 180 safety razor.

  6. Having a few men in my family, I am always looking for something which they can use. You know as Christmas gifts, most men are gifted at least one razor or shaving blade. Maybe this year I will look into this, My husband and older son have a variety of shaving items, due to the fact they have not really found somethings which works for them. Having over packed them with these gifts over the year, I probably won’t get any for them. But my younger son is just starting to shave, so maybe this Christmas I will start his collection of shaving needs. Great informative article, gives me something to think about.

    1. Hi Jetran,

It is never too early to shop for Christmas. This razor will definitely help your younger son to start his shaving journey on the right path.

Just dont give him those multi blade cartridge razors. They tend to give razor burns.
